Ipoh, with its heritage buildings and coffee shops, has retained much of its colonial charm. Hale Lane, Panglima Lane and Market Lane – previously known as the First, Second and Third Concubine Lanes – were part of the more colourful side of the city. Prior to the Japanese occupation of the country (1941-1945), brothels, gaming houses and opium dens prospered in the area.
