The 2014 Incheon Global Cities Arts Exchange Grand Festival is an international event scheduled for the end of 2014. Artists from all over the world are invited to submit paintings for exhibition as a form of cultural exchange. I have decided to draw and submit something uniquely Malaysian, and the pride of Ipoh and foodies everywhere – a painting of our favourite homegrown and hugely successful brand and franchise of Malaysian coffee – Old Town White Coffee.
The Original Old Town White Coffee, Ipoh Old Town
What is ‘white’ coffee? The traditional Malaysian-style coffee is produced by roasting the beans with sugar, margarine and wheat. On the other hand, ‘white’ coffee is produced by roasting the beans with margarine (sans sugar), resulting in a lighter-coloured roast. Ipoh white coffee originated from the old town area of Ipoh, and its popularity has since grown into an unparalleled national sensation. It has become synonymous with the love for coffee in Malaysia. In 2010, it was adopted as one of the official drinks at the Malaysia Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China.
